Ervin Békési | Past Future

solo exhibition

During the past five years, Ervin Békési's leading motifs have been inanimate objects and living beings ("Animal Phrases" and "Still Life" series). The artist has aimed to capture the effect of simple thoughts, personal memories, and our immediate environment. He sought to create systems that differ from the usual in their details, arrangement, and proportions. Carved wood is his most used material, and its goal is to secure the temporary and homogenize the forms/objects that conflict with each other.

During the second half of 2015, he launched a new series, Past Future. The exhibition will showcase this series from start to end while giving the viewer a glimpse into the artist's next theme. Békési aims to build a "wave" that follows his creative process. Accordingly, different technical solutions, scales, and installation methods will alternate while the theme stays the same: abstract remains of artificial objects that were left to perish.

Just as different interests, ideologies, and demands change our environment, the sculptor's dialogue with himself can generate several qualities, even within a series. In the case of Past Future, we will mostly witness an alternation between abstract influences and realistic elements. Although the motifs used are all representations of reality, they are often transformed into unidentifiable objects and sculptures, sometimes simply by mirroring.
